The mining of salt by hand is practiced by locals in the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia. By using picks and shovels the salt is piled high into pyramids to drain the water. Once dry it is shoveled into open bed trucks that take it a few kilometers to Colchani for further processing by hand and using antiquated machinery.
