A prairie rattlesnake (crotalus viridis) is coiled and ready to strike in self-defense. These common rattlesnakes are seen in grassy areas where there are rocky outcrops where they can breed and hide from predators. They are an integral part of the food chain and eat small animals, mostly rodents and give live birth from 9-20 babies in late summer. They hibernate underground in winter.
